Is there any way to do a side braid in your hair for like shoulder length hair?

i have hair that's like 3 or 4 inches past my shoulder, but still consider it short even though it's rpreety long. is there a tip or trick on how to get it into a side braid?!?! also i have layers PLEASE HELP :)
