Can a plant become addicted to cigarette smoke?

My mother had a thriving Braided Money Tree that was exposed to cigarette smoke on a daily basis for over a year. Her husband died in November and by December ALL the leaves have falling off and nothing else has been different other than there is no longer a smoker in the house. Any help ideas or suggestions to bring the plant back would be great. The stem still seems to be alive.
