Why has my cat started scratching the carpets and rugs?

My 8 year old moggy has recently started scratching carpets and rugs for no apparent reason. He also scratches the kitchen vinyl where his dried food bowl is, upsetting it all over the floor. He's driving me mad. Ideas anyone?
